How does Ranked Choice Voting* work?
The candidates are divided into three columns. You rank the candidates in order of preference, 1-2-3.
How RCV is counted
Every voter's first choice vote is counted. Any candidate who receives more than 50% of first choice votes is declared the winner. If no candidate receives more than 50%, a process of elimination and vote transferring begins:
1. The candidate who received the fewest number of first choice votes is eliminated from the race.
2. Voters who select the eliminated candidate as their first choice will have their second choice vote transferred and counted.
3. All of the votes are recounted.
4. If any candidate receives more than 50% of the votes in the second count he or she is declared the winner. If no candidate receives more than 50%, the process of elimination, transferring votes and recounting is repeated until one candidate has the winning majority.
*Note: Ranked Choice Voting was repealed in the November 2009 General Election.
